We have had a confirmed measles case in Pueblo over this last week, here is what you need to know. The individuals most susceptible are infants under the age of 1, people with specific medical conditions and the unimmunized. One shot gives 93% of people immunity and two shots gives 98% of people immunity. Now earlier immunization is not being recommended and a second vaccine before the 4–6-year vaccine is not being recommended; however, a second vaccine can be given for the toddlers who have received a first dose 8 weeks later to provide 98% immunity to concerned parents. This may not be covered by insurance and a third dose will need to be given in the 4–6-year-old time frame in those cases. This is a fluid situation, and recommendations may change however unlike the COVID-19 pandemic, we have a vaccine that is proven safe and effective over a long period of time. Those individuals concerned about their toddler’s response to one dose and desiring a second vaccine can schedule 8 weeks out. I cannot assure that insurance will cover this extra vaccine. I would also ask my families who choose not to vaccinate to consider this individual vaccine. It’s safety and efficacy are proven over a long period of time and at this time I am not aware of any individual who has been vaccinated that has developed measles. This is a very contagious and serious illness that historically has caused disability and death. Please take this into consideration.
